AffiliateSummit.com Turns 13 Today

Once upon a time, there was an affiliate marketing event called Affiliate Force. The last one took place on a cruise ship out of Miami over April 24-28, 2003, and I chatted with Missy Ward on that ship about the need for a better event for the industry.

We talked on the phone soon after, and decided, despite our lack of event planning experience, that we’d create a new conference. We bounced around some ideas, but settled on the name, Affiliate Summit, and registered AffiliateSummit.com on May 19, 2003.

Early on, the company was bare bones and we were clueless, but we slowly got the hang of it. We initially planned to have a competing cruise in 2004 as our first conference, and the first iteration of our logo-free site touted it.

But soon after, we decided to run a one day event in November 2003 to get our name out there.

With no budget and full time jobs, we pulled together Affiliate Summit 2003. There were 200 people in a free space at Baruch College in New York City, and that was the start of something real from this idea we had on a cruise ship bar.
